About 5 years ago I inherited china that had been passed down from generation to generation and I finally made a home for it while furnishing my dining room.
I'm not a big fan of large china cabinets, but wanted something more open and rustic to showcase my dishes. As I searched the internet for ideas I fell in love with the unit shown below. I found one identical to this one for $399 at World Market. Since that was far outside of my price range I planned on putting my idea on hold and just focusing on the rest of the dining room.
About a week after I stopped looking for storage units I came across my neighbors front yard on my way home. I noticed a moving truck and several pieces of furniture in their trash.
I picked this storage unit out of her trash (with her permission of course) and carried it over to my house.
Of course I didn't realize I hadn't taken a before picture until half way through priming it.
These doors were attached to the bottom of the unit, and there were two shelves at the top, the whole unit was a cherry wood color. Instead of sanding it down and painting it I used primer then two coats of Sherwin Williams Summer White paint. With their 30% off special I was able to get a quart of paint for $5!
I first wanted to paint the back, then thought it would be a neat idea to find a pretty fabric to make it pop. I found this beautiful fabric from Hobby Lobby. Their 40% off coupon always comes in handy
!
I accessorized it with a vintage bottle, storage basket and sea shells I bought from home goods a year ago.
The furnishings on top I bought from Home Goods a year ago, Vintage bottle on the bottom from Hobby Lobby and the storage basket from Pier 1.
All and all I spent $15 bucks to make this cabinet.(Spent just a little more in accessories but totally worth it!!!!!)
